We had interesting results in today’s matches as Liverpool, Chelsea, Bayern and Borussia Dortmund played the last game before the international break. Now, on the first day of October, we can play truth or dare and talk about the prospects of their season:
- Liverpool. The side managed by Jurgen Klopp came back from 1-0 for Swansea at half-time. Liverpool won the game after the header of Firmino (54′) and the late penalty converted by Milner (83′). It was a mixed performance as many analysts expected just a walk in the park. The Welsh team could have got a draw and this was possible because of some defensive problems that are still present in the defense of Klopp. Lovren and Matip are two talented defenders but the missing piece of the puzzle is chemistry. Clyne and Milner are attacking-minded and this causes serious problems when facing counter-attacks. On the other side, the fantasy and the beauty of their offensive game cannot be ignored. They combine, use vertical passes and there is no fear to attack. Mane is a valuable add-on while Sturridge, Firmino and Coutinho display Klopp’s philosophy and thirst for show. TRUTH: Liverpool will finish in Top4 if they will start winning easily against underdogs.
- Chelsea. Antonio Conte is a very good manager, without a doubt. But in Premier League there is no room for mistakes or errors. And he has already missed two chances to show his class against top managers. Chelsea lost against Liverpool (1-2) and Arsenal (0-3) and fans are not happy with the current situation. Today, Hull fans were delighted after the first 45 minutes, although The Blues dominated the middle with a 4-3 numerical superiority. But the sprints of Hazard and Moses were useless as there was a blockage in front of goal. The change came in the second half as Chelsea started to play more direct. Willian, Hazard and Costa started to combine and Hull City was too weak to keep the rhythm. Two brilliant shots from the left edge of the 16m box and Conte’s boys were 2-0 up with 23 minutes left. An average display and some question marks. Can Chelsea defend properly without Terry? Can Batshuayi and Cesc Fabregas improve the level of the game? DARE: Conte has to dare to use Batshuayi, Cesc and Oscar as the season lasts from August until May even for Costa, WIllian or Hazard.
- Bayern. The German Champions drew 1-1 at home with Koln. The side from Koln is currently on the fourth position and today’s result confirms they can produce big surprises throughout this Bundesliga season. With 27 shots at target and only 3 on target, this is the start of a crisis at Bayern. They lost at Atletico against an ultra-defensive style and they lack the quality which used to be dominant whilst Guardiola and Heynckes were managers: the shot conversion rate. Although Ancelotti can use Robben, Lewandoski, Coman, Muller, Vidal and Thiago, Bayern seems to suffer. The first sign was the late winner from Kimmich (88′) against Hamburger SV, ranked 17th in Bundesliga. It was confirmed by the lack of ideas against the defensive mentality of Atletico and now it seems to be clear that there is a problem for Carlo Ancelotti. Maybe the international break will bring the best in Lewandoski, Muller and Coman and they will return in top form in Bavaria. DARE: Ancelotti has to risk and rotate his squad as stamina is vital in their fight for Bundesliga and European supremacy.
- Borussia Dortmund. A disappointing performance after the 2-2 draw against Real. Wrong passes, useless possession and weak defence. The transfers done by Dortmund are impressive as they can easily deal with injuries and medical problems within the squad. At the same time, Emre Mor, Dembele and Aubameyang were in total disarray today as Leverkusen players knew how to annull their fantasy style. Kagawa was sent in a bit too late, in the 71st minute. Guerreiro and Weigl fought for every ball but Calhanoglu and Kampl were very inspired in recovering balls and launching counter-attacks for Mehmedi and Chicarito. 2-0 for Leverkusen and Tuchel needs to have a chat with Mor and Dembele as the two youngsters might become the victims of their own talent. TRUE: Borussia won’t win Bundesliga as there is a huge lack of chemistry in the squad.
